Unit 2 – Key Points

  • Typical project planning cycles can help with the development of gender transformative health promotion interventions. They can be augmented by incorporating critical reflective practices, encouraging engagement of key stakeholders, and challenging ourselves to identify the known or potential sex, gender, diversity and equity factors linked to a program, policy or research project.
  • Communities of Practice can provide a useful opportunity for co-learning, collective synthesis and action planning on women’s health which can also lead to gender-transformative improvements in the policy and service systems.
  • Advocacy is “a combination of individual and social actions designed to gain political commitment, policy support, social acceptance and systems support for a particular health goal or program” (24). It can influence outcomes and achieve change and can be used to redefine the structures, norms, attitudes and behaviours that support inequity.
