Gender transformative health promotion focuses on the dual goals of improving health as well as gender equity. It is internationally recognized that gender is among the most influential of the determinants of health and that gender inequities can affect health outcomes and access to health services. Evidence increasingly demonstrates that health care interventions—including health promotion—are more effective if they are designed with gender in mind.
This online course provides an introduction to the key principles and ideas underlying gender transformative health promotion and is designed for a range of audiences concerned with women’s health, including physicians, nurses, social workers, students, midwives, researchers, program managers, and policy makers.
While this course focuses primarily on women’s health issues, the principles are also applicable to men’s health concerns and is based on an understanding of how gender inequity can also negatively affects boys and men. Gender transformative health promotion is interested in improving outcomes for all: women, men, girls and boys.
The emphasis in this course is on increased understanding of the breadth of approaches that can be used to promote women’s health and to develop the skills to develop, plan, and evaluate gender transformative health promotion activities. The course provides practical tools and links to resources so that you can adapt the information learned to the context in which you are working.
The course is divided into four units, each taking approximately 30-40 minutes to complete. Overall, the course should take about 3 hours to complete. You may want to consider completing the course over several sessions to provide more time to reflect on the information provided and to discuss your learning with others.
